Nestwood: A Unique Organic Office Space for Creative Industries

An Oasis of Design and Innovation

The Nestwood Gallery stands out from other office spaces with its experimental generative design process. Every spatial detail is meticulously crafted using the latest digital fabrication technology, including robotic folding and forming techniques. The result is a complex and organic space that replicates the intricate geometry initially conceived in the computer.

Upon entering the Nestwood Gallery, visitors are greeted by an organically shaped reception area, accompanied by a mini bio-pond. This mini-ecosystem is carefully balanced by the atrium light, nitrogen, recycled water, and minor species, creating a serene and welcoming atmosphere. The atrium walls, inspired by natural elements, guide visitors to the upper level through a staircase, further immersing them in the unique design.

The central atrium of the Nestwood Gallery serves as a hub for creative exchange among design teams. This space encourages collaboration and the sharing of ideas, fostering a vibrant and innovative atmosphere. The design team's intention was to create an oasis that inspires and nurtures creativity, making it an ideal workspace for designers and creative industries.

The realization of the Nestwood Gallery involved the use of various materials and fabrication techniques. The design incorporates stainless steel 316L, glass fiber reinforced gypsum (GFRG), nero marquina marble, perforated aluminum, plated fiberglass, and CNC baltic birch. Each material was carefully selected to enhance the overall aesthetic and functionality of the space.

The Nestwood Gallery project began in 2020 and was completed in September 2022 in Toronto. Throughout the design process, the Z Square Group and Manifold Lab Team conducted extensive research on generative design, NURBs, catmull-clark subdivision, as well as material research on robotics, GFRG, stainless steel bending, laser cutting, and CNC marble. The team overcame numerous creative, technical, and research challenges to bring their vision to life.

The Nestwood Gallery has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2023. This prestigious award acknowledges the outstanding creativity and resourcefulness of the design, which incorporates best practices in art, science, design, and technology. The Nestwood Gallery contributes to improving the quality of life and making the world a better place.
